Intensive 30-day Training Programs

Obedience Training

Your dog will learn via training methods that are efficient, effective, fast and will not damage the relationship and trust it has in you. And you will learn a lot of useful handling and training techniques as well -- even if this is your very first dog!

There's a big focus on attention work -- both on-cue and "automatic check-in," so even beginning dogs quickly learn to tune out the environment and focus on you. Polite leash-walking, good household and public manners and a solid recall (come when called), are the highlights of our Beginning Obedience Program. Many of the techniques and methods used are the same as dogs in service dog training programs, so your dog will learn a high level of precision and the ability to work in distractions.

When you want to move past the basics, a wide variety of advanced training options from jumping to scent work to retrieving and introduction to some of the dog sports and competitions is available.

There is an active Facebook page where you can see videos of some of the dogs in training. Check out https://www.facebook.com/k9prodigy/ to get a sense of what K9 Prodigy training looks like.

** Please note, K9 Prodigy does not condone allowing your dog to be off-leash in public areas. Even reliably trained dogs and experienced handlers can make an occasional error, and if your dog is off-leash, a single, split-second mistake could mean its life. In addition, local leash laws require that your dog is on-leash in public. Please be a good citizen, keep your dog’s safety in mind, and unleash only in safe, designated areas!

Behavior Problems

K9 Prodigy handles a variety of canine behavioral problems, from aggression to housetraining issues. All behavior modification training is aimed at treating the underlying cause of the problem. Once we identify the underlying cause, we work on changing it while also training the dog new behaviors it can do in place of the old, bad behaviors. This two-tiered approach is very effective in lasting behavioral change. And with our free e-mail and phone support between sessions, you get personalized coaching every step of the way.

All dogs receiving behavioral modification training will also receive some obedience training, as this helps your dog build (or repair) his or her relationship with you, and your dog will begin to respect you as a leader.

In the Portland area, K-9 Prodigy leads the pack in the most cutting-edge training methods available for dogs exhibiting aggression ("reactivity") to people or to other dogs while on walks. We also specialize in dogs with significant prey drive (chasing cats, squirrels, etc.) If you've already tried a lot of different methods to fix your dogs' problem and nothing's worked, there's probably still something new to try!

True behavior modification can take time. For serious problems that need to be fixed RIGHT NOW, we can generally come up with a temporary solution that will prevent your dog from doing the bad behavior, and keep the problem from becoming worse, while we train.

Specialty Training

Current students can participate in unlimited group training events (some events limited to Intermediate or Advanced students only.) Group training events are held inperson or online.

AVAILABLE CLUBS

Rally Club: Train your dog to perform AKC rally obedience exercises, then get together at course run-throughs. Successful runs can be submitted to the AKC's Virtual Rally Titling Program.

Run Club: Condition your dog to run a 5k. Both training cohorts and 5k runs in and around Portland are scheduled.

Truffle Club: Train your dog to hunt for edible truffles in the woods, and join up for group "mock hunts" and real field events. Delicious!

Tricks Club: Train your dog new fun skills, and you can even earn training titles. Meetups to show off your tricks are scheduled.

Hiking Club: Let's get together and hike or walk in various locations in and around Portland. It's great practice with socialization and manners too.

City Adventure Club: Ongoing socialization outings with the dogs. We might go to an outdoor event or even just a dog-friendly cafe. We will also work on training for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test.

Club Feisty: If you don't think your dog will do well in any of the other clubs because it doesn't get along well with other dogs, then the first order of business will be to help your dog in that situation! Safe meetups where everyone is working on the same thing should help calm things down.
